We start off 2007 with
a review of an impressive new release by Power-Metal architects, OUTWORLD.
Reigning from Houston, Texas this self titled release is quite frankly
atop the power-metal heap (regionally) at the moment. Filled with raw
energy, elusive dynamics, and boisterous attitude, these songs are pushed
far beyond expectations. Initially, one will recognize that Houston
native and a guitar virtuoso in his own right, axe-man, Rusty Cooley
is an amazing and talented player. He showcases every riff and solo
with high intensity and dexterity on this debut exemplifying once again
why he is one of the most notable guitarists in the country. In addition,
long-standing keyboardist, Bobby Williamson fingers his instrument with
exacting precision. Together the Rusty/Bobby duo is quite reminiscent
of the powerhouse that has made Children of Bodom a household name.
The debut’s opening track, “Raise
Hell,” is a fast paced number which kicks off
with sharp and tight riffs intertwined with that exuberant key. It sets
out full speed and never stops to breathe, which is what true fans of
power-metal will come to admire about this song and release. Vocalist,
Kelly Carpenter is also undoubtedly the reason ‘Outworld’
has garnished much praise. On tracks like “War
Cry” his determination and heart shine through
the mix and with the steady foundation of drummer, Matt McKenna, and
bassist, Shawn Kassack each song pummels endlessly forward. The band
maintains this avid pace almost throughout the entire cd, only slowing
at times to allow Rusty and Bobby to highlight their extraordinary talents.
However, it is important to note that despite the undeniable talents
within the band that it’s quite evident that song structures and
flow take priority. Listeners don’t get lost on some radical tangent.
What you get are complex metal compositions which blind you with respectable
instrumental prowess. Favorite tracks include, “The
Never”, Rusty/Bobby’s instrumental, “Prelude
To Madness”, the bands moniker, “Outworld”
and of course, “Raise Hell”.
Recorded at Spyder Studios
in Houston with producer, Gregg Gill, OUTWORLD
has definitely accomplished what they set out to do; that is to exclaim
to the world that Houston is a power-metal town! However, this story
is not without tribulation, as the band has unfortunately parted ways
with Carpenter here in early 2007. Fans should not fret though, as Brazilian
vocal powerhouse, Carlos Zema
has already been tapped to fill the vacancy. Formerly of ‘Heaven’s
Guardian’, Carlos’
amazing vocal talent and stage presence are quite unique and his attribute
is the high energy the band will surely benefit from on stage. We, here
at Robb’s MetalWorks,
look forward to seeing Outworld
with Carlos at the helm.
From what I hear we may have our chance in March
’07. In short, we are big fans of ‘Outworld’
and we look forward to officially showcasing the band on the program
soon. To get your hands on this cd just visit the band’s store
