Man of Sorrows (Self-Titled
Debut)
Has this ever happened to you? You go see a band that is headlining
a show, cause word in the street is “this
is a must see band!” You arrive to the show, and
the “must see band,”
is actually way over hyped. Luckily, you arrive early and catch a new
band that is just building its foundation in town. To your surprise
this was the performance you were hoping to see and hear all week. This
was the case during a recent visit to San Antonio’s
Rock City where I had the fortune to catch the Alamo
City’s very own, Man of Sorrows.
From the first song to the last of their set, the band enthusiastically
and passionately delivered an amazing performance. The band led by long-standing
vocalist/guitarist Damian Omen (formerly of ‘The Ousla’)
blasted through a set of songs from their recently released self-titled
debut out on Hairball8 Records. Delivering a fine blend of ‘Ill
Nino-esque’ tunes highlighted by Damian’s varied voices
and additional percussion, the band is a true representation of the
blissful combination of melody and heaviness some bands spend their
entire careers trying to perfect. They are undoubtedly the leaders in
‘tribal-core metal’ in this town!
Man of Sorrows is also
delivering a different and blessed message within their music that many
of us to do not encounter enough in the scene. The entire band, who
are admitted active Christians and parishioners of San Antonio’s
only underground church, Rise Above, sing of spiritual warfare, overcoming
obstacles in life and praising God. Thus, this self-titled release is
not your everyday slab of metal madness. However, if you are wise enough
to respect the message, then these 11 songs will have you banging you
head and more so, building a fondness for what Man of Sorrows is subtly
accomplishing.
Produced out of Looney Bin Studios the cds sounds is also above standard
giving our favorite tracks like ‘Oracion’,
‘Lest I Fall’,
‘Before I Suffer’ and ‘Walls’
the added gusto they deserve when listening at home. Fans who spend
their hard earned cash on this disc will undoubtedly feel satisfaction
in receiving their money’s worth.
In closing, we here at the program are already big fans of Man of Sorrows.
Our hope is that we will be able to deliver them through video on Robb’s
MetalWorks by year’s end. Till then, go by the band’s my
space page at: link
to hear for yourself all I have proclaimed in this review. Man of Sorrows
is truly a light amongst the heard of bands out there. They must be
“weapons in the hands of God!!”
